The Opening of Stony Point Fashion Park had many logistical challenges to consider during the design phase including the possibility of weather related issues for this unique open-air shopping complex. However, no one could have anticipated Hurricane Isabel would hit on Thursday, Grand Opening day, leaving a path of destruction and power outages the likes of which Central Virginia had never seen.
By the weekend the storms had passed but tens of thousands would be without power for weeks to come...including Stony Point. However, a funny thing happened...if you build it, they will come! And they did. Using generators and our unique street performers, we entertained thousands and helped many escape their worries, if only for a few short hours.
A week later, we officially opened SPFP with slightly less fanfare, but the memories of this event and the power of Mother Nature will not soon be forgotten.
